The Dabke is a traditional folk dance shared in the Levant region, which represents Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. It is a group dance performed during various events such as weddings and parties.
During this workshop your teacher will explain the history and significance of Dabke today as well as the uniform and music that accompany it. You will then be given individual instruction on some of the dance moves and the class will then perform some Dabke dances together.
Today, the art of Dabke is considered a true cultural institution and has many variants. It is performed in a circle or a line by a group of people and represents solidarity and the coming together of communities. It is said that traditionally it has it’s roots in motivating workers to undertake demanding physical labour but today it is a joyous and celebratory dance. It is also a dance practiced by the youth, as a way to connect the new generation to their Palestinian roots and to leave a legacy to the future generations.
This class will be fun and energetic. Come ready for a good workout as well as learning a cool Palestinian dance!
