Arabic calligraphy is the ancient art form of writing Arabic letters in beautiful and often elaborate styles. This workshop will explain the history of the art form, some of the different styles of calligraphy and give an explanation of the meaning behind the designs. You will then have the chance to practice writing your own letters or words and create your own design to take away.
Calligraphy arose as a means of communication and took different forms in different areas of the Middle East and through different time periods. During the 7th Century, the rise of Kufic script played an important role in documenting and distributing the Quran. This form was used until the 13th century and is the oldest script where letters still used today can be recognised. In addition to written documents, calligraphy was also used extensively in architecture as well as being used in textiles and stamped on coins.
In today’s digital age, there is concern that this important part of Palestinian heritage will slowly fade from common use unless it is passed down to younger generations. Artists and others continue to evolve the art form and find new ways of sharing it. By attending this workshop will you play a role in keeping Arabic calligraphy alive!
